Rear Window starts with a man named L.B. Jeffries being confined to his New York apartment after breaking his leg at an auto race. Jeffries is a photographer, who mostly focuses on taking action shots. The window of Jeffries apartment looks out into a courtyard surrounded by many other apartment buildings. Jeffries spends his days getting to know his neighbors by looking across the courtyard into other peoples apartments. After many days of looking into other people’s lives, Jeffries become suspicious of one of his neighbors, and thinks that the man has killed his wife. Jeffries nurse Stella and girlfriend Lisa think he is crazy for making such an assumption, but start to believe it once L.B. tells them some interesting things that he sees throughout the day.
L.B. tells his detective friend about what he’s been seeing, and after a little bit of investigating, the detective tells Jeffries he has nothing to go on. Jeffries decides to take matters into his own hands, while Lisa and Stella get involved too. Lisa decides to sneak into the neighbor’s apartment with Stella being the lookout. When the man comes home and finds Lisa there, he becomes outraged and Jeffries immediately calls the police. The police arrest Lisa and the man quickly figures out that they have been spying on him from across the courtyard. The man goes over to L.B.’s apartment, and after a quick fight between the two men, picks Jeffries up out of his wheelchair and dangles him out the window. The police arrive just before the man drops L.B. out of the window, and arrest the man for the murder of his wife.
